In response to the Luxembourg Parliament's vote on recognising Da’esh's genocide against the Yazidi people, the Yazidi Survivors Network (YSN) and Yazda issue the following statement:
The YSN and Yazda welcome the decision by the Luxembourg Parliament to consider the crimes committed against the Yazidi community by Da’esh as genocide. The formal recognition of the Yazidi genocide was passed by unanimous vote today on 9 November 2022, and represents an important step forward in justice and accountability efforts for the Yazdi community.
We extend our immense gratitude to the Luxembourg Government and Parliament for their continued support of the Yazidi community and their efforts to address the human rights violations committed by Da’esh. We would also like to thank the officials from the Luxembourg Government and Parliament for meeting with the YSN, Nobody's Listening, and the Yazda Team throughout November 2021. We witnessed Luxembourg officials' readiness and willingness to assist survivors of ISIS atrocities and the wider Yazidi community. The Luxembourg Government has also long been an active supporter of ISIS survivors in Iraq, currently funding Yazda’s Mental Health and Psycho Social Support (MHPSS), Case Management and Advocacy Service for Survivors of ISIS Atrocities Project. Through this project, nearly 400 survivors currently residing in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps throughout Duhok have received financial, legal and mental health assistance.
Da’esh committed genocidal acts against the Yazidis, including mass and individual killings, torture, beatings, rape, sexual slavery, abuse and other inhumane and degrading treatment with the intent of decimating the Yazidi population.
The perpetrators of the Yazidi genocide have not yet been brought to international justice, however, this decision by the Luxembourg Parliament represents a positive step toward the pursuit of restorative justice for the Yazidi community. The YSN and Yazda remain committed to pursuing justice and accountability for crimes committed by Da’esh and encourage the international community to follow the example set by Luxembourg and other nations.
Over the past 7 years, Yazda’s advocacy work with the YSN, Amal Clooney, Nobody's Listening and our other partners have resulted in the adoption of similar motions by the British House of Commons, US Congress, the French National Assembly, the European Parliament, the Canadian House of Commons, the Australian Parliament, the Scottish Parliament, the Armenian Parliament, the Portuguese Parliament, the Dutch Parliament, the Belgium Parliament, the EU Parliament and the European Council.
