Yazda was grateful to receive a visit from the German Federal Prosecutor Claudia Gorf and UNITAD on November 10, 2022.
Discussions covered the recent success in bringing ISIL members to justice in Germany, the urgent need for further action on accountability for crimes committed against the Yazidi community, and the important role Yazda played in the investigation of the Yazidi genocide. Yazda documentation team was able to identify survivors who joined the proceedings in Germany and testified in court, leading so far to the conviction of 6 ISIS members, including 2 genocide convictions (see links below).
In Iraq, ISIS members have been prosecuted only under anti-terror laws, not involving survivors in the process and not addressing the full extent of the crimes. Yazda recently published a position paper in coordination with the Coalition for Just Reparation (C4JR) to bring fresh momentum to Iraq’s commitment to pursue criminal accountability for international crimes committed by ISIS in Iraq by delineating best international practices on involving survivors and respecting their rights and needs during criminal proceedings. Now that the new government is in place, advocacy on this topic is crucial.
