Iraq, 24 July 2024
Yazda is honored to have participated in a significant meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, alongside other Yazidi organizations and activists, including Sinjar Academy and Free Yazidi Foundation, to discuss the current situation of survivors of the genocide committed by ISIL and need for continued efforts and support.
During the meeting, Secretary Blinken highlighted the approaching ten-year commemoration of the genocide committed by ISIL, reflected on the United States' engagement during that critical time, and the substantial efforts made to protect and aid those who were endangered.
"We are here today ahead of the ten-year commemoration of the ISIS genocide against Yazidis, Christians, and Shia Muslims – genocide, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing against these and other groups. I have very strong memories of that time, having served in the government when the attacks took place. I remember powerfully the suffering, the desperation of so many people, and the United States engagement to do everything we could to turn that around and to help protect those who were endangered." - U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken
Natia Navrouzov, Yazda’s Executive Director, underlined the need for justice and accountability for the crimes committed against the Yazidis and other communities in Iraq, 10 years after the beginning of the genocide. In the context of UNITAD’s closure, and while core international crimes are yet to be integrated into Iraqi law, survivors and communities affected by the genocide are worried that justice will not be prioritized. Natia also talked about the importance of continuing and accelerating the search for the missing, with more than 2,600 kidnaped Yazidis who remain unaccounted for, and the urgency of exhuming all the remaining mass graves in Sinjar, identifying the remains and returning them to their families for dignified burials. She emphasized that these efforts should continue, even after UNITAD’s closure, with support of the international community and UN technical teams to the Iraqi forensic teams.
Natia Navrouzov commented: “The U.S. was one of the first responders to the Yazidi genocide in 2014 and we are grateful that 10 years later, the U.S. publicly renewed their commitment to support our community. Together with the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government, and the support of the U.S. and the international community, we will work to find sustainable solutions for Sinjar and its people and ensure peace and stability.”
Secretary Blinken emphasized the importance of remembering and honoring the victims by sharing their stories and acknowledging the ongoing challenges faced by the affected communities. He mentioned the significant displacement caused by ISIS, which forced millions of Iraqis from their homes, including the majority of Iraq’s Yazidi population.
Secretary Blinken further noted: "We’ve worked hand-in-hand with civil society, with community leaders from across Iraq’s religious and ethnic components, to help these communities recover, to advance Iraq’s stability and sovereignty, and, of course, to do everything possible to make sure that ISIS cannot rear its ugly head again."
