Yazda Condemns Turkish Airstrikes in Sinjar and Calls for Protection of the Yazidi Community
November 11, 2024
Yazda strongly condemns the ongoing and recent Turkish airstrikes in the Sinjar region, which have exacerbated the suffering of Yazidi civilians. These attacks undermine the safety and stability necessary for the community's recovery, hinder the return of displaced Yazidis to their ancestral homeland, and increase the insecurity and instability in Sinjar and in Iraq.
The ongoing military operations pose significant risks to civilian lives and have, in the past, led to tragic losses, including the killing of children. Such incidents highlight the urgent need for all parties to prioritize the protection of civilians and adhere to international humanitarian law and the three fundamental principles of distinction, proportionality and precaution.
Many Yazidi survivors grapple with severe mental health challenges stemming from previous atrocities, violence, displacement and loss. Renewed violence disrupts the healing process and perpetuates a cycle of trauma, making it increasingly difficult for the community to feel safe, return and rebuild their lives. Turkish strikes and other national and regional geopolitical conflicts have affected the returning process of over 200,000 Yazidis to their homeland after more than 10 years of ISIS genocide.
Yazda urges respect for the sovereignty of Iraq, international law, and the fundamental right of its people to live in peace and security. We call upon the international community to facilitate a peaceful resolution that ensures the safety of the Yazidi population in Sinjar. We also renew our call upon the Iraqi government to stabilize the security situation in Sinjar and to centralize the various fighters and armed groups under the former Iraqi defense system
For a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by the Yazidi community, please refer to two of our recent reports:
● There is no future in Sinjar without safety and agency
Yazda remains committed to advocating for the rights, safety and well-being of the Yazidi community and all other communities in Sinjar and Iraq. We stand in solidarity with all those affected by the recent airstrikes and reiterate our call for peace, security, and the upholding of human rights in Sinjar.
