U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, Alina Romanowski, Receives Yazda, Survivors and Advocates of the Yazidi Genocide at Her Residence for Nobody’s Listening Exhibition
Baghdad, 25th November 2024
The US Ambassador to Iraq, Alina Romanowski received Thikran Mato, advocacy officer for Nobody’s Listening, advocate and survivor, Shireen Khero, and Natia Navrouzov, Yazda’s Executive Director during an event to showcase the Nobody’s Listening Virtual Reality (VR) experience to Ambassador Romanowski, Embassy Officials and guests at the Embassy on 13th November 2024.
The event sought to enhance awareness of the Yazidi genocide through technology-driven storytelling, with key stakeholders and esteemed guests attending and showing their support to communities affected by the genocide. This event marked the culmination of a series of Nobody’s Listening events in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to mark the 10th commemoration of the Yazidi genocide.
Throughout the projects in the past months, the VR experience was showcased at various prominent locations in Iraq, including The American University in Iraq-Baghdad (AUIB), Catholic University in Erbil (CUE), The Station, Red Terror Museum/Amna Suraka, Halabja Memorial, University of Duhok (UoD), and The General Directorate of Sports Education and School Activities. Over the past months, over 200 people have experienced the VR where it served as a platform for education, reflection, and advocacy, thanks to funding from the US Embassy in Iraq.
The Nobody’s Listening initiative was first launched in the Iraqi Parliament in 2020 and has since been showcased in schools and universities in the UK, United States, France, Germany, Luxembourg and elsewhere. This program is an innovative tool and demonstrates the transformative power of storytelling through cutting-edge technology in genocide education and prevention. By amplifying voices and raising awareness about the Yazidi genocide and the ongoing challenges they face, this initiative serves as a vital platform for advocacy and remembrance.
Ambassador Romanowski said, "This initiative does not just reflect the past but also shines an important light on the Yezidi people’s ongoing struggle for justice, accountability, and the safe return to their homes."
Yazda Executive Director, Natia Navrouzov commented: "Despite ISIL's territorial defeat in Iraq, little has been done to address the root causes of the genocide targeting the Yazidis. A recent example is the hate speech campaign that Yazidis faced this summer, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the genocide. This disturbing incident underscores how much progress is still needed. Education is a key approach to combating hate, and the Nobody’s Listening VR experience offers a powerful means to foster understanding and empathy."
Thikran Mato, Yazidi Survivor and Advocacy Officer with Nobody’s Listening, highlighted: "We were honored to present Nobody’s Listening at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C., earlier this year and to showcase our VR experience in the U.S. Congress, as well as in schools and universities across the United States. We deeply appreciate the support of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, which has enabled us to extend this work throughout Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The impact of this program has been profound, and we hope the VR experience will be integrated into the Iraqi curriculum, ensuring that future generations bear witness to the history of what happened to the Yazidi community."
The event at the US Embassy in Baghdad signifies a momentous occasion, bringing together key stakeholders to reflect on the impact of the Nobody's Listening initiative and chart a path forward for continued support and solidarity with the Yazidi community.
