Iraq, 14 August 2024
Today, we solemnly remember the nearly 800 lives lost in the coordinated car bombings that struck the Yazidi communities of Tel Azer (Qahtaniyah) and Siba Sheikh-Khedir (Al-Jazeera) in Sinjar, northern Iraq, on August 14, 2007. This horrific event, which left over 1,000 more injured, stands as one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in Iraq and a stark reminder of the longstanding persecution faced by the Yazidi people.
The bombings, executed with a fuel tanker and three vehicles loaded with explosives, caused widespread devastation. Entire neighborhoods were reduced to rubble, and countless families were buried beneath the debris. As highlighted in a Yazda report published last year, these two villages were also among the first ones targeted by ISIL in its genocidal campaign of August 2014.
This tragedy underscores the ongoing vulnerabilities of the Yazidi community and highlights the critical need for effective governance and security in the Sinjar region as highlighted in a recent report published by Yazda. The persistent failure to address these issues leaves the Yazidi people exposed to continued threats of violence, deepening their suffering.
There is an urgent need for sustained and comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and security of Yazidi communities, preventing such atrocities from happening again. The recent rise in hate speech against Yazidis further illustrates this pressing need.
